Judges' Critique

Thank you to the committee of Midlands and Northern Rhodesian Ridgeback Club for asking me to judge their open show. Thank you to all exhibitors who were very sporting and provided me with some super dogs to judge. Ridges were correct but there were a few off set crowns, these I treated as a fault as I did with construction faults and other breed standard variations.

1st Welch's Space Explorer – 17 months strong, tall wheaten male with correct bone. Lovely typical, masculine head and expression. Balanced angulation front and back, would prefer slightly more depth of chest. At first he was unsettled on the move but when settled moved with drive.

1st Cyprien & Williams' Jocebec Jelani Elite – 2 years, large wheaten dog, lots to grow into. Head needs to strengthen with maturity has a lovely expression and ear placement. Wonderful front onto straight legs and tight feet. Nice length of neck onto well laid shoulder and at the rear good turn of stifle. He has an effortless if not a little lazy movement. A very nice youngster.
2nd Lloyd's Lionpride Leonardo at Bomazi – 2 and a half year correct size wheaten dog, similar to 1 in angulation and a lovely front although feet could be tighter. Again nice head and expression in the correct proportions. Covered the floor well on the move.
3rd Walton Haddon's Mwenga Special Brew.

LD (1,0)

1st Piehl's Kiromol Kubwa Mno JW – Lovely light wheaten self coloured 20 months dogs. Wonderful head and expression absolutely typical and with correct proportions. Nice length of neck onto well laid shoulder, straight front onto tight feet, toes in slightly. Nice depth of chest and length of loin. Good rear assembly with nice turn of stifle. Fantastic movement free and easy with drive – covered the floor with ease. RBD

OD (3,0)

1st Webster's Ch Ngoma Uzuri of Umbari JW ShCM – 6 years red wheaten tall dog. This dog has certainly matured into a lovely dog and settled into his angulation. A wonderful head and expression and a super neck onto well laid shoulder. Would prefer slightly more return of upper arm. Lovely depth of chest onto super front. Effortless movement if not a little exuberant at times. BD & RBIS
2nd Sales' Lionpride Leo JW ShCM – 4 year old standard sized wheaten dog. Nice head and expression. Another dog with a good straight front although would prefer tighter feet. Lovely front and rear angulation, would prefer a little less length of loin. Super turn of stifle and hocks well let down. Moved with drive.
3rd Davis' Jaloumi I Am Legend from Hesslewell JW.

1st Bates' Gunthwaite Disco Diva – 8 and a half months red wheaten bitch beautiful head and expression, lovely reach of neck, straight front onto tight feet, lovely profile although would prefer slightly more length to height ratio. Moved very well and covered the ground with drive. BBP & BPIS
2nd Kirby & Mansfield's Shingwidsi Tshelete Silk – Absolute baby at 6 months wheaten bitch. Beautiful head and expression. Lovely front and rear angulation although would prefer a little less length of loin. Very nice overall puppy who moved like a baby, very playful.
3rd Coates and Conder's Wothersome Diamond Doris – Really liked this youngster unfortunately on the day she would neither be handled nor move around the ring in order to assess movement.

PB (5,1)

1st Bates Guthwaite Disco Diva – see previous class
2nd Maylor's Kamili Busara – 11 months wheaten big bitch. Nice head and expression and ear placement all the correct proportions. Super straight front although feet could be tighter. Wonderful matching angulation front and back. Moved with purpose and drive.
3rd Davis' Veldtkammer Reddy for this from Hesslewell

JB (3,2)

1st Smith's Neelanjali Premier Rose at Lilongwe – 16 months wheaten bitch. A  little unsettled whilst being handled today and so this slightly detracted from her expression, having said that she had correct head proportions. Nice length of neck onto well laid shoulder and return of upper arm. Nice front onto straight legs with good depth of chest. Good rear angulation matching the front. Moved steadily but lacked drive.

NB (4,2)

1st  Coates and Conder's Laftone Lass – 5 and a half years wheaten bitch, a little on the tubby side today but construction wise she has lovely length of neck onto well laid shoulder and return of upper arm. Nice depth of chest. Good rear assembly with nice turn of stifle. Feet could be a little tighter. I would describe this bitch as full of breed type as it used to be. Movement was a little erratic as I understand this was a first outing for both dog and handler.
2nd Gleeson's Veldtkammer Rock on Chick – 1 year 9 months wheaten bitch. Nice head and expression with correct proportions. Lovely straight front onto tight feet. In profile did not have the angulation of 1st place. Nice hindquarters. Moved well and covered the ground well.

GB (5,0)

This was a very nice class of bitches.

1st Parson's Priorpark Yakini – 1 year 9 months light wheaten correct sized bitch who won this class on her outstanding movement. Beautiful head and expression with fantastic dark round eyes.  Lovely length of neck onto well laid shoulder and return of upper arm. Nice depth of chest. Good rear assembly with nice turn of stifle. Good hindquarters.
2nd Smith's Neelanjali Premier Rose at Lilongwe – Still a little unsettled or would have been a contender for 1st place.
3rd Coates and Conder's Laftone Lass

PGB (2,0)

1st Walshe's Monduri Kasulu Kasindra – Two and a half year wheaten bitch of correct size. When writing this I looked back at a previous critique and the exact same applies - Lovely head and superb round, dark eye, good ear placement and nice depth of muzzle. Good length of neck onto beautiful lay of shoulder and return of upper arm. Lovely balanced angulation front and rear. Moved nicely with drive although a little wide in front. A very pleasing overall hound.
2nd McCarthy Booth and McCarthy's Jarhiba Ikshula – Two years wheaten bitch. Nice head and expression. Nice straight front , would prefer slightly more forechest. Nice matching front and rear angulation, presented in super condition. Movement was more unsettled that 1st place.

LB (5,3)

What a close class, liked both these bitches for very different reasons

1st Sales' Lionpride Grand Edition - Two and a half year wheaten bitch of correct size. Loved her breed type. Good length of neck onto well laid shoulder. Absolutely super front infill of chest and straight front, feet could be a littler tighter, good depth of chest and great length of body. Rear angulation matches the front perfectly producing a good turn of stifle. Looking from rear hindquarters straight and true. Lovely free effortless movement.
2nd Storey's Kiromol Tallulah Belle JW – 19 months taller wheaten bitch not as feminine as 1st. Nice length of neck onto well laid shoulder, straight front onto tight feet. Nice depth of chest and length of loin. Good rear assembly with nice turn of stifle. Beautiful in profile. Moved with reach and drive.

OB (5,2)

1st Storey's Kiromol Kinuka – 6 years wheaten bitch. This bitch took my eye the moment she entered the ring she moved wonderfully with reach in front and drive from behind and by far the best level topline of the day. Lovely correct head and expression. Lovely tight elbows onto great straight front and good feet.  Wonderful matching front and rear assembly with lovely reach of neck, lay of shoulder and turn of stifle. Superb mature bitch. BB & BIS
2nd Lawless' Ch Faahac Farenya JW ShCM – 20 months mid wheaten standard sized bitch. Lovely correct head and expression. Presented in very good condition. Lovely front onto good feet. Good reach of neck onto well laid shoulder and return of upper arm. Good depth of chest with lovely tuck up. Good ribbing and length of loin presenting excellent height to length ratio. Good turn of stifle.  She also moved around the ring superbly with reach and drive. RBB
